Over a few weeks, students were asked to cast their hand/arm to
create a form that would become the base for a sculptural self-portrait.
Starting with an interview and some brainstorming exercises they developed some ideas for various themes that could be worked into this sculpture. Once they finished casting and refining the surface of their pieces they modified the surface to communicate a clear personal message to the viewer. Ways to modify the surface were optional and
included but were not limited to the following: drawing, painting, carving,
collaging, covering with another material like fur, moss, hair etc.
