Art Department Policies and Procedures

  • Behavior:

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist”  - Pablo Picasso

  • Tardiness and Attendance:
- When the bell rings you must be in the classroom. If you are not you must have a pass from a teacher or the office. Students without a pass will sign the tardy sheet as soon as they enter class. Please record your full name and amount of time late. 3 tardies a quarter will result in a classroom detention.
- Your daily attendance is part of your daily effort/participation grade. If you are consistently absent, it will lower your grade. You can make up absences by scheduling time to stay and work after school in the studio. You are also responsible for making up any missed work.

  • Leaving Class:
- Please do not ask repeatedly to leave class. Frequent trips out of class will result in loss of the privilege to leave the room. Only one student may leave at a time and must ask for a pink hall pass before leaving.

  • Food and Drink:
- You may have food and drink in class with you as long as you are respecting this privilege. It is unsafe to eat while working with certain materials (oil paints for example) and also impractical. The art studio is not the lunch room, please keep a clean area and understand that eating should not get in the way of working.

  • Electronics:
- The art studio can be a very messy space. Please keep all electronics off the tables and stowed away in a safe place. Texting and phone calls are not allowed. If you are seen using your phone for this purpose it will be taken away until the end of class.

  • Start of Class:
- You’ve got work to do! There’s always a daily assignment or a project to be working on. Please get out your binder and get something to write with as soon as you get to class.

  • Clean up / End of Class:
- Cleaning up early will result in a low daily grade. When it is time to clean up, please put all your materials away where they belong, be responsible for your work area, and help clean your table and sink area.
- Crowding around the door at the end of class in not allowed and will result in a zero for your daily grade.

  • Fire Drill and Lock Down:
- Fire Drill: Please walk slowly out of the classroom and toward the entrance of Conant. Proceed to your designated EBLOCK area outside in the parking lot.
- Lock Down: I will lock the door and shut off the lights. SILENTLY move away from the classroom door and windows. Find a place behind or underneath a table to hide until we are notified that it is safe to come out.

Conant Art Department Grading Policy

  • 40% Projects
  • 40 % Daily Effort / Participation
  • 10% Portfolio Review (Midterm/Final)
  • 10% Critique (Midterm/Final)
Projects: These assignments will last longer than one class period and will need to be completed in a timely manner. Students will be expected to demonstrate some knowledge and skills learned from daily exercises. Each project will be graded based on its own rubric provided on the day the project is introduced.
Daily Effort and Binders: Daily effort and participation is essential in this class. Each student is responsible for their overall engagement, attitude, and performance. Many of the assignments in this class will be daily exercises. They may not be finished pieces but will prepare students for creating a finished work. It will be up to each student to keep track of these assignments in their binders where they will be graded based on the Participation Rubric. If students would like to revisit an exercise and complete it as a finished piece at some point when they have free time they can. Each student will be responsible for keeping a binder. This binder will stay in the classroom and will collect all handouts and worksheets from class. The first 10 minutes of class there will be time to make entries and complete daily exercises. These entries can be written, drawn, scribbled, pasted, collaged…. whatever you want as long as it’s visible. This will be part of the daily grade and at the end of this course it will be handed in as part of the final grade.
Portfolio: You will be responsible for keeping track of your work and presenting your completed projects during midterms/finals.
Critique: The four different stages of critique will be reviewed and then practiced in class. Some exercises will be critiqued informally in writing. A Final Exam will consist of a formal critique where students give verbal and written responses.
Homework: Most homework will require students to do some research to prepare for class. It may be anything from researching an artist to gathering found objects. Homework grades will be factored into project or portfolio evaluations.
