Year Long Outline


720 AP Studio Art                               Grade 12                             Semester Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Successful completion of two previous advanced studio art courses
Recommended minimum of 83 average in two previous advanced studio art course


Course Description: In this extremely intensive course, students will choose to produce a 2D or Drawing centered portfolio of 40 artworks. This class is intended for students who are planning to attend a fine arts program post-high school, or for the serious-minded student who is looking to earn their college art credit in advance. Students in this course must be self-motivated, as the course is very much individualized with a large amount of work expected to be done at home. The work created for this course will be reviewed in the spring by an AP studio art jury, and may be used as part of a college application.


Course Objectives: Using a variety of materials we will study painting techniques and the history of painting. Students will know and be able to use a variety of methods and historical references throughout their painting exercises, projects, and written responses.


Course Goals:
1. Master an understanding of the Elements of Art (Line, Shape/Form, Value, Color, Space & Pattern, and Texture) and use them in creating and analyzing artwork.
2. Confidently apply the Principles of Design (Balance, Unity, Contrast, Emphasis, Pattern, Movement, and Rhythm) in creating and analyzing a piece of artwork.
3. Learn about various artists/styles as they relate to our units of study.
4. Develop skills and language needed to critique artwork.
5. Research and inquire about post secondary art programs and colleges.

Introduction to AP Studio Art: Choosing a direction Drawing or 2D?
Review Summer Portfolio / Completing unfinished work
Beginning the Breadth Section: a set of works showing mastery of varied media, techniques, and subject matter. This should include 12 images of 12 different works.
- Complete 1 sustained/long in class assignment for Breadth section
- Complete 3 short duration assignments for Breadth section
October
- Complete 2 sustained/long in class assignment for Breadth section
- Complete 3 short duration assignments for Breadth section
November
- Complete 1 sustained/long in class assignment for Breadth section
- Complete 2 short duration assignments for Breadth section
December
Begin Concentration Section: plan and develop a body of work that is an investigation of a theme or an idea.
- Write a statement to describe the intent and development of the concentration project using accurate artistic language.
- Reference at least one artist that whose work has some relationship to Concentration.
- Create a plan sketches in sketchbook for Concentration project.
January
- Begin Concentration work. You must have 12 slides for this work and some can be close up images.
- 4 works must be completed
February
- Complete any work needed for Concentration
- 4 works must be completed
March
- Complete last 4 works for the Concentration Section
- Begin Quality Section: Five matted works, these should be students most successful work with respect to the scoring guidelines and cannot be any larger than 18” x 24”.
April
- Complete Quality Section
- Schedule after school photo shoot for portfolio
- Matt selected artworks
May
- AP portfolio materials assembled and delivered.
- Work on June presentation: Present your digital portfolio, artist statements, and discuss your AP experience.
June
- Finish presentation and select presentation date.
